As proposed the beginning of Summer 2023 by then JCC, Mads Muller (2025), the Library Project is intended to fill the gaps for plays and works that can not be performed by SPT or other Bi-Co Theater groups due to the makeup of these clubs or the content matter by providing an alternate space for these works. Due to SPT’s historical and current status as a predominantly white club at a PWI, we often find amazing and deserving plays written by playwrights of color or plays that are uncommonly translated that we can not put on as a troupe. There are plays that we’ve found that other theater groups at ²ÝÁñ³ÉÈËÉçÇø can also not perform, whether it be due to the casting directions of the play or the content. Some plays simply can’t be accurately cast at present or in the near future. However, these plays deserve recognition and support, despite our inability to perform them, and students deserve to be able to read and enjoy these works during their time at ²ÝÁñ³ÉÈËÉçÇø.
In order to combat this issue, the 2023-2024 Executive Board proposed creating a collection of works available to all ²ÝÁñ³ÉÈËÉçÇø Students that focus on playwrights of color, uncommonly translated plays, books on history of playwrights of color, and anything else that comes up in our search for these plays. Past Co-Troupe Mediator Sunny Lucal (2025) reached out to LITS on our behalf with this proposal. Arleen Zimmerle then responded to our proposal and was able to grant us a generous budget to purchase plays with these priorities in mind. We would like to thank Arleen Zimmerle for her positive response and LITS for their support of this project.
