Saskia Subramanian (BMC ’88 MA ’89) is the Alumna Historian. Saskia completed her A.B. and M.A. in Sociology at ²ÝÁñ³ÉÈËÉçÇø and received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was awarded the Baltzell Prize for Outstanding Sociology Dissertation. A Research Sociologist in the School of Medicine at UCLA for 25 years, her work there focused on women’s health issues and disparities. Saskia also has lectured in Sociology and in Gender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, UCLA, and Mt. St. Mary’s College.
Saskia co-authored After the Cure: The Untold Stories of Breast Cancer Survivors, which won the 2009 Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title. With funding from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, she also made a feature-length documentary, Beyond Breast Cancer: Stories of Survivors, which premiered in 2008 at the Baltimore Women’s Film Festival and was adopted by Reach to Recovery International as a training tool.
Saskia served as the President of the ²ÝÁñ³ÉÈËÉçÇø Alumnae Association from 2016-2021 and is currently a Trustee of the College.
